As we discussed in class, Voice over Internet Protocol is a Internet based system that transmitts phone calls instead of telephone grids. These Internet phone networks can span thousands of miles. It is expected that 3.3 billion dollars will be spent in the next 5 years on these systems. My article, titled "Comapnies turn to Voice Over Internet Protocol systems" discussed how major businesses are switching from telephones to VOIP. It stated that 22 major corporations have made the switch. The key reasons for the switch include cost savings on long distance calls, reduced network managing tasks, being able to place all employee workers office, cell, and other phones, on a single network, and allow transition of more than one conversation at a time. However, the bottome line is that these companies will be saving money on their phone bills. As the technology was introduced a few years ago, there were a few skeptics, but as the system became efficent more and more people are jumping on board. Finally, many have made the switch because the phone land line may become distinct in the near future.
I enjoyed the experience to talk about a course topic in a smaller group. That is one of the problems with going to a big university is that you have big classes alot of a time. It was nice to be in a smaller group to talk about a subject that we had read about.

Article Abstract:
Matthem Fordahl’s article gives teh axample of Vonage as a leading VoIP service provider. He explains exactly what Vonage is, and how it is an applicable service to the average telephone consumer. What Fordahl is paying special interest to is the competition that is forming between the traditional telephone company and Vonage. SInce the the VoIP is no longer relying on the traditional phone lines, it is creating a market that is not dependent upon the phone companies any longer. What larger Bell companies are doing to counter the technology is to offer bundle packages for service. Fordahl uses Qwest as an example of a major telephone compnay using the bundling option as a way to counter Vonage. Since Qwest is an internet service provider, they are able to offer the consumer a package of high speed internet and VoIP service for a reduced rate. This allows the telephone companies to keep a customer base, and also utilize the new VoIP technology.
Fordahl is exploring in his article the competition that is heating up between teh already powerful telephone companies, and the smaller VoIP companies which are trying to offer teh new technology to consumers.
